i heart SNL

Posted in election 2008 tagged , , at 12:34 am by Malia Yoshioka

i couldn’t get the video to post, but click here to see last night’s SNL clip of tina fey as sarah palin (again). hilarous! as a bonus, this site put up palin’s actual interview below the SNL clip so you can see how little fey even needed to stray from palin’s own ridiculous answers. too funny.

vacation for a cause

Posted in home in hawaii tagged , , , , at 8:33 am by Malia Yoshioka

i just came across this article on the LA Times travel blog. lots of great deals on hotel stays, benefitting a good cause!

a bunch of waikiki hotels are participating, including the ultra-luxurious halekulani! packages all seem to require a 3 night stay, but include treats like spa treatments, dining credits ($150 at nobu!), yoga mats, surfing lessons, etc to give you more value in the rates… and a portion of the proceeds benefit the susan g komen foundation for breast cancer research. the packages are available til december (dates vary by location), so if you have a special occasion to celebrate it might be worth a look. maybe it’s time to plan that hawaiian vacation you’ve always dreamed of? and if you’re kamaaina, you can vacation in waikiki (play tourist) and not have to pay the crazy airfares to get away =)

another reason i DO NOT support sarah palin

Posted in election 2008 tagged , , , at 12:16 am by Malia Yoshioka

you may have heard recently that sarah palin got her first passport LAST YEAR. this, in itself, would not be a problem. but for someone who could potentially become PRESIDENT of the united states of america, should something happen to (the not-the-most-youthful) john mccain, i think that travel abroad would show a broader worldview and a better understanding of how america fits into the world arena. as a vice president (and potential president) ms. palin would need to (i’d hope!) interact with world leaders frequently, especially as the world grows smaller and smaller every day with communications and technology bringing us all closer together.

debate day humor

Posted in election 2008 tagged , , at 9:29 am by Malia Yoshioka

a few laughs in time for the debate today…

david letterman really wouldn’t let mccain off easy for canceling his appearance on the show (and “suspending” his campaign):

mexican home cooking

Posted in daydreaming tagged , , , at 2:29 pm by Malia Yoshioka

so now that i’m back in hawaii with no money (anybody hiring?), i must be content with daydreaming about where my next adventures will take me…

i recently read about the mexican home cooking school in tlaxcala, mexico. for $1250, you get seven days/six nights accomodation, all meals, and five cooking lessons in the mornings, with afternoons free to explore the area around tlaxcala.

makes me want to read like water for chocolate again…

a girl can dream, right?

a bit of color

it’s been over ten years since i’ve spent more than a week at home on maui. today, i made myself go outside and wander around my backyard to remind myself not to take for granted the beauty all around me – even just right out in my yard. so pretty.

to move, or not to move?

Posted in daydreaming tagged , , at 10:53 am by Malia Yoshioka

that is the question.

with the state of the economy and politics in the US these days, i’m very, very tempted. not to mention, while traveling abroad i constantly had to answer for george bush’s antics and everyone – regardless of how well they could even speak english – seemed to know more about the US presidential race than most people i know – myself, included!

the art of unpacking

Posted in home in hawaii tagged , , , at 9:58 am by Malia Yoshioka

coming home brings with it a terrifying new reality for the long-term traveler: the need to unpack. it seems simple – take all your clothes, toiletries, and miscellaneous crap out of your suitcase and put it away nicely. even a child could do it. right?

well… when you’ve been living out of a suitcase for over eight months, it’s not as easy as you’d think.

coming full circle

Posted in home in hawaii tagged , , , , at 2:54 pm by Malia Yoshioka

this year started out on a great note. regardless of what kind of celebrating we had done the night before, a group of my friends and i all met at sandy beach on oahu to toast the first sunrise of the new year together. we all wrote “letters to the universe” for what we hoped was in store for us in the coming months, sealed two copies – one to open on january 1, 2009, and burned the other in a mini-bonfire on the beach together as a group.

later, each of us picked a word to sum up our goals for the year, wrote them in sand, and then let the ocean sweep them away. mine was EXPLORE.
