attitude adjustment

Posted in job hunting in honolulu tagged , at 7:56 am by Malia Yoshioka

it’s been a long time since i’ve posted here, and just yesterday i was thinking about how in my “about me” section i had talked about being in between jobs and loving it. well, the honeymoon phase is over. when i was between jobs by CHOICE, that was a different story. and i’ve never had as much trouble finding a job in my life as i have had in the past few months.

inspired

this morning my dad, my brother and i met in front of the tv at 6:45am, bleary-eyed and still half asleep, sharing a quiet excitement to watch obama’s inauguration. i cried a few times during the speech and had moments of being choked up, feeling so PROUD to be american. i am truly inspired, and excited to help and do my part to make our nation and the world a better place!

on a side note though, watching bush’s departure was poignant and right up there with my favorite moments of the whole spectacle. congratulations PRESIDENT OBAMA!

100 places i want to go before i die

Posted in daydreaming, home in hawaii tagged , , , , , at 8:38 am by Malia Yoshioka

first of all, some background.

to get to the reason i started this list, we’ve got to travel back in time to 2005. i had just turned 25, and i was having my quarter-life crisis du jour when i decided to make a list of 30 things to do before i turn 30. the original list included things like buying an apartment, running a marathon with my dad, and skydiving. well, the marathon i’ve done (3 times! woo hoo!) but a lot of the rest still looms uncompleted, and i’ve only got about 14 months to go! the biggest problem for me is that i’ve had to reassess my list quite a few times in order to keep up with my current status as a travel-holic (for lack of a better term).

a year ago today

Posted in home in hawaii tagged , , , at 2:49 pm by Malia Yoshioka

… was the day jess and i left hawaii, with the whole world ahead of us. we both got to the airport before the sun had even come up, got ourselves checked in for our china airlines flight and dragged ourselves to the gate where we fought to stay awake long enough not to miss our call for boarding. it was the beginning of an adventure, a year that definitely changed my life.

tradition

Posted in home in hawaii tagged , at 3:44 pm by Malia Yoshioka

last year my friends and i started a tradition. christy came up with the idea, and it spread throughout our group and even to some friends of friends. since everyone had different plans for how to ring in the new year – some at home, some with friends & family, some out at the clubs, etc. – we all decided that we’d meet up just before sunrise at sandy beach on oahu’s east side in order to welcome in the new year together, regardless of where we were at midnight the night before.

marathon man

Posted in home in hawaii tagged , , , , at 7:12 am by Malia Yoshioka

this morning i woke up at 6:30am, and my first thought was: i wonder where my dad is right now. not that i’ve lost him or anything. he’s actually on oahu at the moment. but specificially, where is he?

see, today my dad is running in his 11th consecutive honolulu marathon. i was right next to him every step of the way (literally) for numbers 8, 9, and 10. this year is my first year to miss it, and although i don’t miss the miles and miles of training, blisters, and knee injuries, i do sort of wish i could be seeing what he’s seeing right now.

happy birthday, mom

today is my mom’s birthday. i know she’ll be reading this (as you may have noticed, she’s almost always the first to comment on each and every blog i’ve ever posted.) so i thought it appropriate to tell her here:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM!

writer’s block

Posted in home in hawaii tagged , , at 9:42 pm by Malia Yoshioka

it seems like in the past few weeks i’ve had more opportunities than ever come up for ways to continue to focus on writing. but i find myself banging my head against that proverbial brick wall in trying to come up with something interesting to write! geez.

i guess it has something to do with the fact that i’m stationary at the moment. while i’m enjoying living on maui, the challenge of a new job, and being able to see my family every day, there’s that part of me that just wants to get up and go somewhere.
