a tourist in my hometown

Posted in china, home in hawaii tagged , , , at 11:08 pm by Malia Yoshioka

i will try to post these journal entries for the day they were actually written, since i wasn’t able to post in china. here’s the first installment – feel free to sign up through any RSS reader, or check back for more. will try to get the rest up soon…

the doors to the bus closed and i instantly felt like my adventure had begun. it’s always interesting to see your hometown through a tourists’ eyes and the #19 bus was most definitely a way to get the full impact. through waikiki via kuhio avenue, i glanced up to see the hotel towers overhead and hungover, badly sunburned tourists walking the sidewalk below. everything seemed slightly artificial – manufactured happiness, almost like disneyworld, mass-produced aloha spirit for your convenience. but as i rode through in air conditioned comfort, suitcase by my feet, i didn’t mind a bit. i was leaving waikiki and headed for the airport, ready to get on with my adventure.

last year my friends and i started a tradition. christy came up with the idea, and it spread throughout our group and even to some friends of friends. since everyone had different plans for how to ring in the new year – some at home, some with friends & family, some out at the clubs, etc. – we all decided that we’d meet up just before sunrise at sandy beach on oahu’s east side in order to welcome in the new year together, regardless of where we were at midnight the night before.

marathon man

Posted in home in hawaii tagged , , , , at 7:12 am by Malia Yoshioka

this morning i woke up at 6:30am, and my first thought was: i wonder where my dad is right now. not that i’ve lost him or anything. he’s actually on oahu at the moment. but specificially, where is he?

see, today my dad is running in his 11th consecutive honolulu marathon. i was right next to him every step of the way (literally) for numbers 8, 9, and 10. this year is my first year to miss it, and although i don’t miss the miles and miles of training, blisters, and knee injuries, i do sort of wish i could be seeing what he’s seeing right now.

writer’s block

Posted in home in hawaii tagged , , at 9:42 pm by Malia Yoshioka

it seems like in the past few weeks i’ve had more opportunities than ever come up for ways to continue to focus on writing. but i find myself banging my head against that proverbial brick wall in trying to come up with something interesting to write! geez.

i guess it has something to do with the fact that i’m stationary at the moment. while i’m enjoying living on maui, the challenge of a new job, and being able to see my family every day, there’s that part of me that just wants to get up and go somewhere.

wow, two weeks without a post! my poor blog is being neglected…

the past few weeks have been crazy busy, but in a good way. and talk about “in between jobs!” i swear, i must be a poster child. my most recent job at the law firm was working out great but they weren’t able to give me full time hours so my temp agency was filling in the gaps for me.

enter random job #2 – ballot prep for the elections. yup, i’m gonna be helping out on election day (working a 14 hour shift!) helping to make sure all those votes count! (you’ve voted already, haven’t you?) i actually feel pretty excited to be helping out in such a historic election, but the pay was great too. =)

tourist for a day

Posted in home in hawaii tagged , , , , , at 9:31 am by Malia Yoshioka

with the economy dragging what’s left of my meager savings down the drain, i’ve started putting out resumes to the local temp agencies here in hopes of getting a job in a law firm until i move back to oahu in january. i’ve never tried seeking work through a temp agency before, but i must say it’s nice to have someone doing all the hard work for me! =)

so in the anticipation of *gasp!* heading back to join the working world sometime in the near future, dee and i decided to play tourist for a day in lahaina.

vacation for a cause

Posted in home in hawaii tagged , , , , at 8:33 am by Malia Yoshioka

i just came across this article on the LA Times travel blog. lots of great deals on hotel stays, benefitting a good cause!

a bunch of waikiki hotels are participating, including the ultra-luxurious halekulani! packages all seem to require a 3 night stay, but include treats like spa treatments, dining credits ($150 at nobu!), yoga mats, surfing lessons, etc to give you more value in the rates… and a portion of the proceeds benefit the susan g komen foundation for breast cancer research. the packages are available til december (dates vary by location), so if you have a special occasion to celebrate it might be worth a look. maybe it’s time to plan that hawaiian vacation you’ve always dreamed of? and if you’re kamaaina, you can vacation in waikiki (play tourist) and not have to pay the crazy airfares to get away =)

living in paradise

a bit of color

it’s been over ten years since i’ve spent more than a week at home on maui. today, i made myself go outside and wander around my backyard to remind myself not to take for granted the beauty all around me – even just right out in my yard. so pretty.
